Laurel Lee's Hurricane Hypocrisy After Voting Against Disaster Relief

Writer: Zach KnausZach Knaus

Congresswoman Laurel Lee is touring damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton after she voted NO on critical FEMA funds.

Congresswoman Lee recently voted against essential FEMA funding that District 15 and the State of Florida desperately need. Lee also voted to shut down the federal government when Florida needed the most help.

Instead of standing up for the people of District 15, Lee chose to play politics. She has turned her back on the resources necessary to help our community recover from the destruction caused by hurricanes and unprecedented flooding in District 15 and Tampa Bay.

“Floridians are counting on disaster relief to rebuild their lives after Helene and Milton, yet Congresswoman Lee was missing in action when it came time to support that funding. She may talk a good game, but her votes show she’s not committed to our community,” said opponent Hillsborough County Commissioner Pat Kemp. “District 15 deserves real leadership that prioritizes our safety and recovery, not empty promises.”

While Hillsborough County Commissioner Pat Kemp is on the ground supporting recovery efforts in Tampa Bay, Lee is silent on her vote against FEMA funding.

Lee’s voting record speaks for itself.  Lee voted against FEMA funding and wanted to shut down the federal government as Helene hit Florida. Lee was also against the National Flood Insurance Program that protects 1.7 million Florida homes.

Lee consistently votes against federal funding to make Florida’s people and infrastructure more resilient to climate change and extreme weather.

As recently as last night, at a Town Hall addressing hurricane relief, which Lee was invited to, Lee didn't show up but Hillsborough County Commissioner Pat Kemp did. Lee has failed District 15 in the wake of these historic storms and will not keep it resilient to future storms.
